Campaign all about Dean, even if he says otherwise – www.smh.com.au

Campaign all about Dean, even if he says otherwise – www.smh.com.au: “The new year marks the start of a dash for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination that could end in just 60 days if Howard Dean holds his lead in money, public opinion polls, endorsements and organisation.
The primaries and caucuses present opportunities for the other candidates, but money, momentum and ingenuity have made the once unknown former governor of Vermont the person to beat in the field of nine. He is seen as the candidate of change and, consequently, a lightning rod for attacks.
‘This is a campaign about us [Democrats], not about me,’ Dr Dean told supporters in South Carolina this week. ‘This is all about making George Bush a one-term president.’
But with the presidential preference voting just weeks away, the campaign is about Dr Dean, and Democrats are worrying about his ability to beat Mr Bush in the November general election.
The endorsement last month of Dr Dean by Al Gore, the former vice-president – especially his statement that the hopeful had been ‘right all along’ to oppose the war in Iraq – seemed to silence some of the grumbling within the Washington establishment. “
